FAQs

Q. Why does TNVolunteerism.org currently not offer email accounts?

A. Email, although a widely used form of electronic communication, is subject to much SPAM and distribution of viruses today. Protection of email accounts requires the use of multiple SPAM and virus filters as well as a full time manager just to oversee the administration of any email server. In order to maintain free hosting services to Tennessee nonprofit organizations, TNVolunteerism.org has opted out of offering email services. We suggest that you consider using free email services such as Gmail.com by Google or Yahoo.com as your primary email provider for your nonprofit organization.

Q. What does URL mean?

A. A URL is a website address and it stands for uniform or universal resource locator. It is the address that you enter in your browser when you want to visit a website. http://www.TNVolunteerism.org or just http://TNVolunteerism.org.

Q. I am unable to get to my website by ftp. What am I doing wrong?

A. The most likely cause is that you have not set up your ftp client software properly as indicated above. It could be a problem with your user account name or password. Be certain that inforamtion is entered correctly, and remember that the letters are case sensitive. However, sometimes corrupt files and other problems can degenerate your account data entered on the FTP server so if problems continue, please do not hesitate to contact TNVolunteerism.org Support by email at TNVolunteerism@Gmail.com.

Q. What does FTP mean, and how do I use it with ftp.TNVolunteerism.org?

A. FTP means file transfer protocol. It is the way that HTML documents and images (.gif and .jpg formats) are transferred from your computer to the server hosting the nonprofit organization's web site on TNVolunteerism.org.

Q. Why are websites with domain names ending in .org or .info the only ones hosted by TNVolunteerism.org?

A. TNVolunteerism.org provides Internet services to middle Tennessee nonprofit organizations seeking such services. This is a voluntary service offered only for nonprofit groups, and thus the only top level domain name designations we believe appropriate for nonprofit organizations are either .org and .info at this time. In the future there are some other domain names, such as .museum and .aero, that could contain nonprofit services. The only other exception at present is for some, very specific services offered through the .US domain name. For example, .k-12.state.TN.us or .cc.state.TN.us. TNVolunteerism.org is willing to make exceptions to its policy restricting hosting to .org and .info names, in the case of these very specific .US domains.
